Top-load not agitating (fills and drains OK)
On older Whirlpool/Kenmore direct-drive top-loads, fill-and-drain-OK but no agitate/spin is the classic broken motor coupler. On newer models, look at the shift actuator/clutch, lid lock and motor.

Reading the model number
Post-2006 Maytag models follow Whirlpool-family model numbering; use the full number with suffix when ordering parts.
Manufacture date from the serial number
Cross-checkedTwo eras. (1) Whirlpool-style (about 2006 on): character 2 = year code, characters 3-4 = week, same as Whirlpool. (2) Original Maytag (about 2005 and older): the LAST TWO LETTERS of the serial are the date - first of the two = year letter, second = month letter.
EXAMPLE ONLY: Whirlpool-style M51812345 -> 5 = 2015, week 18. Old-style 12345678HK -> H = year letter, K = month letter (look up in the Maytag chart).
Old Maytag year letters run on a long cycle (one source: 24 letters, skipping I and O), so each letter maps to years about 24 years apart; we did not find two text sources agreeing on the full letter tables, so no table is published. Some original-Maytag-style serials continued past 2006. Some sources say the old-style date letters are characters 9-10 of the serial.
