Over-the-range (OTR) microwave: field service manual

Covers: Microwave/hood combinations hung on a wall mounting plate under an upper cabinet above a range. The cooking section is a transformer (or, on some models, inverter) microwave; this manual covers what is different: vent fan, damper, cooktop light, filters, installation and power.

Cross-checkedBrands: GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire7 components

An OTR unit is a microwave plus a range hood. It hangs on a wall plate, is bolted up through the cabinet, and plugs into an outlet inside the cabinet above. Besides the usual microwave faults it brings vent fan, damper, light and installation problems, and it lives in heat, steam and grease from the cooktop, which shortens keypad, switch and waveguide-cover life.

Safety first

  • DANGER: the HV capacitor can hold a lethal charge even after the breaker is off and the cord is unplugged
  • Untrained users must not open the wrapper
  • Every internal step: breaker off, unplug, discharge with an insulated resistor tool, verify 0 V, then work
  • Never take energized measurements on the HV circuit; never bypass door interlocks
  • Two people to remove or hang the unit; support it until all top bolts are tight
  • New outlets or circuits are electrician work under local code
  • Use metal duct only

How it works

The microwave section works exactly like a countertop unit (see the countertop or inverter manual).

A separate vent blower draws air from under the unit through the grease filters. Depending on how the blower is oriented at installation, air is pushed out the top, out the back, or back into the kitchen through the front grille (recirculation, through a charcoal filter).

Most units ship set up for recirculation. Venting outside requires rotating the blower unit and fitting the damper to the top or back opening and a metal duct.

The damper is a flap that opens with airflow (or, on some Samsung models, a motorized damper monitored by the control) and closes to stop drafts when the fan is off.

A heat sensor watches the area above the cooktop. If it gets too hot, the vent fan starts by itself on low and may run for up to about an hour; it cannot be turned off during that time. Some models also run the vent fan as a cooling fan during cooking.

Cooktop lights under the unit are switched by a relay on the control (often with high/low/night settings).
