Built-in and drawer microwaves (Sharp drawer, GE/KitchenAid built-in): field service manual

Covers: Microwave drawers (Sharp 24 in and 30 in drawers, and drawers sold under other premium brands) and built-in microwaves installed in cabinetry with a manufacturer trim kit. Coverage is limited to what public sources support; use brand service data for anything deeper.

A microwave drawer slides out like a drawer under a counter or wall oven, driven by a motor with position sensing; the microwave section inside is a conventional HV circuit with the same interlock logic. Built-in microwaves are usually countertop units fitted into a cabinet with a trim kit that channels cooling air to the front. Most calls are drawer movement, no-heat, dead unit and overheating from improper installation.

Safety first

  • DANGER: the HV capacitor can hold a lethal charge even after unplugging
  • Untrained users must not open the cabinet
  • Every internal step: unplug, wait, discharge with an insulated resistor tool, verify 0 V, then work
  • Never take energized measurements on the HV circuit; never bypass drawer interlocks
  • Keep fingers clear of the drawer path when testing the motor

How it works

Drawer models: pressing Open (or a touch/wave sensor on some Sharp models) runs a drawer motor that drives the drawer out on slides; position or sensing switches tell the control when it is fully open or closed. The microwave will only start when the drawer is detected fully closed, which also closes the door interlock switches.

Inside, the cooking circuit follows the same pattern as other microwaves: line fuse, interlock switches (including a monitor switch), HV power supply and magnetron, with thermal cutouts on the magnetron and cavity. Wolf lists a switching power supply among the parts behind dead-unit faults.

Built-in (trim kit) installs: the trim kit and its ducting route the unit's exhaust air out through the front of the kit so it does not recirculate inside the cabinet. Without the correct kit, the unit can overheat and fail early.
