Whirlpool / Maytag top-load washer (VMW HE platform and classic direct-drive / belt-drive): field service manual
Covers: Vertical Modular Washer (VMW) HE top-loads sold as Cabrio, Bravos, Oasis, Shark-style Whirlpool/Maytag HE top-loads and later Whirlpool HE top-loads; also the classic Whirlpool/Kenmore direct-drive (motor coupler) and older belt-drive top-loaders.
Two very different designs share these badges. The VMW platform (about 2008 onward) uses an electronic control, a motor under the tub that drives the wash plate or agitator through a shifter, a rotor position sensor, a pressure sensor and a lid lock, with F-code diagnostics and a stored tech sheet. The classic direct-drive design uses a reversing induction motor coupled to a gearcase through a rubber coupler, with a mechanical timer and lid switch; agitation and spin are selected by motor direction.
Safety first
- Unplug and shut off the water before opening the cabinet.
- Discharge a motor start capacitor before handling it.
- Never bypass the lid switch or lock to watch the basket spin with hands near it.
- Drain the tub before tipping the washer.
How it works
VMW start and load sense: the lid lock engages, then the control turns the dry load to estimate size before adding water (low-water HE wash).
VMW fill: primary hot/cold valves combine with secondary valves that route water through the dispenser; water enters only when a primary and a secondary valve are both open. A pressure sensor reports level.
VMW wash: the shifter sets the drive to agitate, so the motor turns only the wash plate or agitator. A recirculation pump on some models sprays water back over the load.
VMW shift and spin: the shifter moves to spin, coupling the basket. The control watches rotation through the rotor position sensor; if it cannot see the expected motion it flags a drive fault (F7 family). The drain pump runs, then the basket ramps up while the control checks for imbalance (Ofb/unbalance).
VMW lid logic: the lid locks for the cycle and unlocks when the basket stops. Lock failures show as LdL / F5 family codes.
Classic direct-drive: a timer controls everything. The motor turns one way to agitate and the other to spin; a neutral-drain gearcase lets the pump drain before spin. The lid switch must be closed for spin. The gearcase drives a clutch and brake; when spin starts the clutch ring releases the brake and the basket turns via the spin tube and drive block.
Belt-drive (older): the motor runs one direction; the timer energizes wash or spin solenoids that engage the transmission or basket drive, and a brake holds the basket during agitation. The lid switch cuts spin when the lid opens.
