Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive top-load washer: field service manual
Covers: Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive / Intuitive / Ecosmart top-loaders (e.g. GWL, WL, WA families). Older units report faults by beep pattern plus a binary pattern on the cycle LEDs; newer units have a numeric display.
A direct-drive top-loader: a brushless DC motor sits under the tub with the stator fixed and the rotor on the shaft, so there is no belt or gearbox. Rotor position is read by a Hall-effect rotor position sensor (RPS). On SmartDrive models the motor controller is built into the main control module. Common calls: won't spin, out-of-balance stops, motor/RPS faults and dead controls after a line-voltage part fails.
Safety first
- Unplug before opening the console or reaching the motor.
- Do not replace the control before testing the line-voltage loads.
How it works
The control senses the load, fills, and drives the motor directly through the controller. Agitate and spin both come from the same direct-drive motor.
The rotor position sensor tells the controller where the rotor magnets are. Harness or connector problems between the RPS and the controller are the most frequent cause of motor-related codes; check them before buying a sensor or board.
An out-of-balance (OOB) switch near the tub tells the control the tub is hitting it. A lever that has moved (for example something wrapped round it) can make the machine stop with an OOB fault on a balanced load.
Faults are signalled by repeated beeps and the machine pausing. On LED-only models the lit/unlit pattern of the cycle LEDs forms a binary fault number to look up in the tech sheet.
A tech sheet is normally stored inside the console (often under the touch-pad panel, left side, near the water valves).
