Whirlpool / Maytag / Kenmore 29-inch dryer (electric & gas): field service manual

Covers: Whirlpool-built 29-inch full-size dryers: the older mechanical-timer / basic-electronic platform and the newer electronic-console platform with F#E# codes. Gas and electric versions. Commercial-grade residential and Duet-era front-load companions are mentioned only where noted.

Cross-checkedBrands: Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Amana, Roper15 components

The most common dryer in US homes and rentals. One motor turns both the drum (through a belt and spring-loaded idler) and the blower wheel. Electric units carry a heater in a duct box; gas units carry a burner tube with igniter, flame sensor and a two-coil gas valve. Newer electronic consoles report two-part codes such as F3E1 or F4E4 and have a built-in service diagnostic mode; the tech sheet is usually tucked inside the console or behind a panel.

Safety first

  • Unplug before opening panels; live 240 V checks are caution steps with insulated probes
  • Gas models: close the shutoff before working; never loosen gas fittings, the valve body or test gas pressure - refer to a licensed gas technician. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility
  • Never bypass a thermal fuse, cutoff or high-limit
  • Sheet-metal edges are sharp; wear gloves

How it works

Heat circuit (electric): 240 V reaches the heater only when the control calls for heat AND the motor is running. On timer and basic models a centrifugal switch on the motor closes the heater circuit once the motor reaches speed, so a motor that will not start also means no heat. The heater is protected in series by a high-limit thermostat and, on many electric models, a one-shot thermal cutoff on the heater box; the cycling (operating) thermostat or the exhaust thermistor regulates temperature.

Heat circuit (gas): the same safety chain feeds the burner. When heat is called, the igniter glows; the flame (radiant) sensor is closed when cold, letting current flow through the igniter. When the igniter is hot enough, the sensor opens, current is routed through the valve coils, the valve opens and the flame lights. If the flame goes out, the sensor cools, closes and the igniter re-glows.

Safety thermostats: the thermal fuse (one-shot, usually on the blower housing or exhaust duct) opens on dangerous exhaust temperature and, depending on design, kills heat or the whole motor circuit. The high-limit opens if inlet temperature runs away and resets when cool. A blown fuse or cutoff is a symptom: find the airflow or regulation fault before closing up.

Airflow: the blower pulls room air across the heater or burner, through the drum, through the lint screen and out the 4-inch exhaust. Every temperature device depends on that airflow; a restricted vent drives exhaust temperature up, cycles the heat off early and eventually blows the fuse. Newer electronic models estimate airflow and show AF or a Check Vent light.

Moisture sensing: two metal bars near the lint screen are bridged by wet clothes. The control reads the resistance between them; as the load dries the contacts become rare and the control ends the cycle (plus cool-down). The exhaust thermistor helps estimate dryness on electronic models. Residue on the bars or an unlevel dryer causes early or late shut-off.
