LG dryer (electric, gas, heat-pump): field service manual

Covers: LG 27-inch front-load-companion dryers with digital display (electric, gas, steam models); brief notes on LG ventless heat-pump models.

Single sourceBrands: LG8 components

LG vented dryers are electronic with a Flow Sense exhaust monitor (d75-d95 codes), heater-current sensing (nP) and supply-wiring sensing (PS). Many electric models use a dual-coil heater, so one burned coil gives weak heat instead of no heat. Heat-pump models are ventless and contain a sealed refrigerant circuit, which is off-limits.

Safety first

  • Live 240 V checks are caution steps
  • Gas: electrical tests only, gas and power off; refer gas work to a licensed gas technician
  • Heat-pump sealed system: diagnosis only, refer to an EPA 608-certified technician; some heat-pump dryers use flammable refrigerant, so no flames or sparks near a suspected leak

How it works

Electric heat: the heater needs the full 240 V while the motor and board run on 120 V, so a lost leg gives a dryer that tumbles with no heat; LG flags this as nP (no current at heater). Thermostats and a thermal fuse sit in series with the heater; the board uses thermistors (tE1 / tE3) to regulate.

Gas heat: hot-surface igniter, flame sensor and two-coil valve. The display can show gAS (looks like 9A5) when no gas or no flame is detected. One forum case found a manually resettable thermal device on the burner tube; check the tech sheet for which protectors are resettable.

Airflow and Flow Sense: the dryer estimates exhaust restriction and shows the percentage (d75, d80, d90, d95) and bars on the Flow Sense indicator. On gas models d80 can also show with low gas supply.

Moisture sensing: bars under the lint filter area; HS is the sensor fault and LG says the dryer then falls back to a long fixed run.

Heat-pump (ventless) models: air recirculates through an evaporator (removes moisture) and a condenser (reheats air); water goes to a drain hose or tank. They run cooler and longer than vented dryers and rely on clean lint and condenser filters.
