GE and Whirlpool-family ranges and wall ovens: control and lock specifics

Covers: GE electronic range controls (ERC/EOC) with F-code display, and Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid / Amana electronic controls using F#E# codes, electric and gas, ranges and wall ovens.

Cross-checkedBrands: GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana6 components

Both families share the same basic hardware (RTD sensor, relay-driven elements or igniter, motorized self-clean lock) but differ in code format and menus. GE uses short F-codes (F0-F9) and a Special Features (SF) menu; Whirlpool-family controls use two-part F#E# codes, a tech sheet with wiring and diagnostics supplied with the product, and newer touch models have a service menu.

Safety first

  • Power off at the breaker before removing panels
  • If the oven heats with the control off, kill the breaker: welded relay
  • Gas models: control and igniter checks only; gas valve work is blocked

How it works

GE: the ERC reads the keypad, oven sensor and lock switch, and drives element relays (electric) or the igniter circuit (gas). Key codes: F7 shorted function key (classic after self-clean), F2 over-temperature, F3/F4 sensor open/shorted, F5 control fault, F9 lock circuit.

GE oven calibration lives in the Special Features menu: hold Bake and Broil (Hi/Lo) together for about 2-3 seconds until SF shows, press Bake, enter the offset, press Start. Range is ±35°F; it changes Bake (and Convection Bake on some models), not broil or clean, and survives power failure.

Whirlpool family: the first part of the code names the system (F1 control, F2 keypad, F3 sensor, F5 door/lock, F6 temperature/appliance manager, F9 supply wiring) and the second part (E0, E1...) narrows the fault. F9E0 points to a supply miswire or post-outage spike; F6E1 is tied to the appliance manager or its wiring per Whirlpool, and one third-party source describes it as cavity over-temperature during cooking.

Whirlpool calibration depends on the control: a Settings/Options/Tools menu on newer models; on others, holding the Temp/Time down arrow about 5 seconds (5°F steps, ±30°F) or holding Bake about 5 seconds (10°F steps). Older knob ovens use screws on the back of the knob.

Self-clean lock logic (both families): on Clean the control runs the lock motor and waits for the lock switch to confirm before heating. A door switch / lock switch disagreement (Whirlpool F5E0) or a lock that never reaches position (Whirlpool F5E1, GE F9) blocks self-clean. The lock releases only after the cavity cools below the safe threshold.
