Viking Professional gas range (electrical side): field service notes

Covers: Viking Professional and 5/7 series gas ranges and rangetops, electrical side only (spark ignition, glow-bar oven igniter circuit). Viking publishes little service data publicly; most facts below come from technician/owner forums and are marked accordingly. Viking built-in refrigerator codes conflict between sources and are not included.

Viking pro-style ranges use a spark module for the surface burners and, on most gas ovens, a hot-surface (glow-bar) igniter wired in series with the oven safety valve. Continuous-clicking and slow-oven-light calls dominate. Parts lists and diagrams are mainly available through Viking itself.

Safety first

  • Gas valve, regulator, orifice and pressure work is blocked: shut the gas off and refer to a licensed gas technician
  • Live-voltage and amp-draw tests are caution work: keep hands clear of the burner area

How it works

Surface burners: turning a knob signals the spark module, which sparks all electrodes at once and watches the burner being lit; once it senses flame on that burner it stops. If it watches the wrong burner (miswired) or cannot sense flame (reversed polarity, poor ground, wet electrode) it keeps clicking.

Gas oven: the control or thermostat powers the glow-bar igniter, and the igniter's current also passes through the bimetal of the oven safety valve. Only when the igniter draws enough current does the valve open. A weak igniter glows but the burner lights late or not at all. Use the shared gas-oven-not-heating guide for the current-draw test.

Power and neutral path: forum techs point out that line comes from the control while the neutral returns through the gas valve. Measuring igniter lead to ground with the oven calling for heat separates a missing line feed from an open neutral path.
