Whirlpool / Maytag / Kenmore Duet-style front-load washer: field service manual
Covers: Duet, Duet Sport, Maytag front-loads and Kenmore front-loads built on the Whirlpool platform (series names only; check the tech sheet behind the lower panel or in the console).
Whirlpool-built front-loaders split control between a main/central control unit and a motor control unit (MCU) that drives a three-phase motor (belt-driven on many Duet generations, direct-drive on later models). A tach or rotor-position signal returns speed to the MCU. Codes use the F#E# format and the platform has a well-documented service diagnostic mode.
Safety first
- Unplug before any resistance test.
- Live voltage checks at the pump are caution work; keep probes on the terminals and hands clear of moving parts.
- Diagnostic mode runs the motor and pump.
How it works
Start: door switch reports closed, the door lock engages and confirms; failure shows F5E2 (lock) or F5E1 (switch).
Fill: valves fill through the dispenser; the pressure sensor reports level (F3E1 sensor fault, F8E1 long fill).
Wash: the MCU tumbles the drum; on heater models a heater and thermistor control temperature.
Drain: drain pump at the front-bottom with a coin trap on many models; long drain gives F9E1.
Spin: the MCU ramps speed while monitoring the tach/rotor signal; loss of speed feedback gives F7E1. Suds detection (Sud) pauses spin and adds rinses.
Door release: after the drum stops and water is below the door line.
