Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid / Amana French-door and side-by-side refrigerator: field service manual

Covers: Whirlpool-built French-door bottom-mount and side-by-side refrigerators: older units with dial controls and an adaptive-defrost board, and newer units with electronic controls showing flashing F-codes (F/E pairs), roughly 2005-2024

The four brands share platforms, so one tech sheet often covers several badges. Most units use a single evaporator in the freezer with a damper (or an air door) feeding the fridge. Some French-door models add a separate ice compartment fed by freezer air. The tech sheet behind the base grille, or taped inside the cabinet, is the key document: it holds the F/E fault code meanings, the diagnostic mode and the test values.

Safety first

  • Unplug the unit before service.
  • Live-voltage tests at the board are caution work.
  • The sealed system is blocked: refer it to an EPA 608-certified technician.
  • If you bypass a bimetal to test the heater, never leave it bypassed and don't overheat the evaporator area.

How it works

The compressor (fixed-speed with a start device on many models, variable-speed on some newer ones) and the condenser with its fan are at the bottom rear. The evaporator sits behind the freezer back wall. The sealed system is not field-serviceable without EPA 608 certification.

Airflow: the evaporator fan pulls air across the coil and sends part of it to the freezer and part through a damper or air duct into the fridge. Electronic models drive a motorized damper from the fridge thermistor. Older dial units use the fridge control to set the airflow.

Adaptive defrost: the control counts compressor run time (and door openings on electronic models) and starts defrost when needed. A bimetal on the evaporator must be closed (cold) for the heater to run, and it opens when the coil warms. The board also caps the heater time. On one older adaptive board the test cycle ran the heater for up to 21 minutes or until the bimetal opened.

On normal room temperature, Whirlpool says the compressor runs about 40-80% of the time and longer in warm rooms. Allow 24 hours for the unit to cool after installation and wait 24 hours between control changes.
