Compact & budget mini-fridges: field service manual
Covers: Compact and mini refrigerators, beverage centres and kegerators about 1.7-4.5 cu ft, both compressor and thermoelectric (Peltier) types.
Two very different machines are sold as mini-fridges. Compressor units are small sealed systems with a mechanical thermostat or simple board, a start relay/overload on the compressor and often a static (fanless) condenser. Thermoelectric units have no refrigerant: a Peltier module with a fan on the hot side, and they can only cool a fixed amount below room temperature. Identify the type first. On compressor units the economic decision matters: sealed-system repairs usually cost more than a new unit.
Safety first
- Unplug before handling the relay; reconnecting a relay live can arc.
- Sealed system is blocked: no brazing, recharge or compressor replacement; refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Compressor type: the thermostat closes, power goes through the overload and start relay to the compressor. A hot compressor that is not running has usually tripped its internal overload and needs time to reset; a click every few minutes points to the start device or the compressor.
Thermoelectric type: the module pumps heat from the inside to the hot-side heatsink. Typical performance is roughly 30-40 °F below room temperature, so a unit in a hot garage will never reach fridge temperatures even when working correctly.
Defrost: most compact compressor fridges are manual defrost. A unit that seems dead may simply be in or after a defrost; confirm before diagnosing.
