Whirlpool ED5 / GD5 side-by-side refrigerators (older generation): quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerators with model numbers starting ED5 (for example the ED5FHGXK and ED5FHEXV families) and Whirlpool Gold GD5 units, plus Kenmore side-by-sides with the 106. prefix built on the same Whirlpool cabinet. These are the mechanical-dispenser, single-evaporator side-by-sides techs still meet from the mid-2000s to early 2010s. The exact year range per model was not confirmed by two sources: date the unit from the serial number and the tech sheet.
A conventional Whirlpool side-by-side: one evaporator behind the freezer back panel, an evaporator fan that pushes air into the fresh-food side through a damper or air duct, timed or adaptive defrost, a modular ice maker on the freezer door side feeding a through-the-door dispenser, and a condenser fan and compressor in the bottom machine compartment. Most calls are a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer (airflow or defrost), no ice, and dispenser jams. Find the tech sheet on the unit (often behind the lower grille or inside a panel) before ordering parts.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels, fans, heaters or relays.
- Shut off the water before opening the valve or fill lines.
- Never chip frost off the coil with tools; a punctured evaporator is a sealed-system failure.
- Sealed refrigerant system (compressor replacement, leak repair, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom, protect the food and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Single evaporator in the freezer. The fresh-food side gets its cold air only through the evaporator fan and the damper or duct between the two sides, so a stopped fan, a frosted coil or a stuck damper shows up as a warm fresh-food side while the freezer stays fairly cold.
Defrost is controlled by a timer or an adaptive defrost control (check the tech sheet for which one your model uses). The heater melts frost off the coil, a defrost thermostat or sensor ends the heat, and the melt water runs down a drain tube to a pan under the cabinet. A blocked drain refreezes after every defrost and builds ice at the bottom of the coil.
The ice maker needs a cold freezer to cycle. Repair guides that quote Whirlpool put the target freezer temperature at about 0 to 5 F; a warmer freezer can stop the ice maker even when nothing is wrong with it, so fix cooling first.
Water runs from the inlet valve at the bottom rear, through the filter, up the hinge side of the freezer door to the dispenser and to the ice maker fill tube. Whirlpool tells owners to check the water line and wiring at the bottom freezer hinge when ice or water stops.
Kenmore 106. models are Whirlpool-built (see the Kenmore prefix cross-reference sheet), so Whirlpool parts lookups by the full Kenmore model number usually apply.
