Refrigerator preventive service: condenser coil cleaning, condenser fan and door gasket check
Whirlpool says routine condenser cleaning is often not needed in a normal home but recommends inspecting and cleaning every few months where there is dust, grease or pets; older GE manuals say at least yearly. Many current GE models have a sealed 'NeverClean' condenser that needs no cleaning, and some Whirlpool models can only be cleaned by a technician. Know which design you have before you pull the fridge out. Finish with a gasket and door-seal check.
Before you start
- Unplug the refrigerator or turn off its breaker first
- Do not kink or pull on the water line when moving the unit
- Do not bend condenser fins or tubing; a punctured tube is a sealed-system repair
- Reinstall every grille and rear panel; they direct airflow across the condenser
