LG Standard-Depth MAX 4-door French-door LF29H8330 / LF30H8210 (2023): quick sheet

Covers: LG 36-inch Standard-Depth MAX 4-door French-door units: LF29H8330* (28.6 cu ft, external ice and water dispenser; ENERGY STAR on the market from July 7, 2023) and LF30H8210* (29.6 cu ft, internal water dispenser, no door ice; on the market from June 28, 2023). Both have the Full-Convert middle drawer. Canadian versions are sold as LF29S8330S / LF30S8210S; check the exact model and suffix before ordering parts.

LG's 2023 standard-depth 4-door line: two French doors on top, a 3.2 cu ft Full-Convert drawer in the middle and a freezer drawer at the bottom, with a Smart Inverter compressor, one evaporator and R-600a refrigerant. The LF29H8330 has a door dispenser with an in-door ice maker; the LF30H8210 keeps the water dispenser inside the fridge and makes ice only in the freezer. Safety first

  • Unplug before removing covers, fans, heaters or sensors.
  • Shut off the water before opening the valve or ice maker fill lines.
  • R-600a (isobutane) is flammable: no open flame, sparks or brazing near the machine compartment; ventilate if you suspect a leak.
  • Test mode runs with the board live: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry.
  • Sealed refrigerant system work (compressor, leak repair, recharge, brazing) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

LG lists one evaporator and three temperature sensors for both models. With a single coil, the fresh-food section, the convertible drawer and (on the LF29H) the in-door ice compartment all depend on air from the same evaporator, so one frosted coil or failed fan shows up as several warm complaints at once.

The Smart Inverter compressor runs at variable speed under main-board control and LG markets the result as 'Linear Cooling' (small temperature swings). ENERGY STAR and LG list R-600a refrigerant, which is flammable: sealed-system work is referral only.

The Full-Convert drawer is set from the panel or the ThinQ app to run at fridge or freezer temperatures. A drawer that seems 'too cold' or 'too warm' is often just set to a different mode.

Ice: the LF29H8330 has a through-the-door ice and water dispenser (ENERGY STAR), and retailers list a dual ice maker with cubed and crushed ice. The LF30H8210 has no door ice (ENERGY STAR), an internal water dispenser and a freezer ice maker. LG lists the daily ice output as 3.0 lb (3.3 lb with IcePlus) on the LF29H and 2.5 lb (2.7 lb) on the LF30H.

Defrost is board-controlled with a heater, defrost sensor and thermal fuse. LG's board-level test mode (see below) forces cooling, the damper and a defrost.

Samsung refrigerators: reading display codes, Cooling Off (demo) mode, and forced defrost (Fd) / test mode concepts

Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to make a code go away, because that erases what the technician needs; only a few power-related codes are cleared by a 60-second power cut. An OF OF or similar display is Cooling Off (demo) mode, not a fault. The test mode is entered by holding a model-specific pair of buttons until the display blanks, then pressing a button to step through modes, one of which is forced defrost (Fd).

LG's Smart Diagnosis sends the appliance's status to the ThinQ app over Wi-Fi or, on older models, as an audible tone the phone picks up near the appliance speaker; the app then shows the result. A fridge that looks normal but does not cool may simply be in display (demo) mode. LG also has service test modes that run fans, compressor and defrost on command; entry varies by model and should come from the service sheet.

Refrigerator preventive service: condenser coil cleaning, condenser fan and door gasket check

Whirlpool says routine condenser cleaning is often not needed in a normal home but recommends inspecting and cleaning every few months where there is dust, grease or pets; older GE manuals say at least yearly. Many current GE models have a sealed 'NeverClean' condenser that needs no cleaning, and some Whirlpool models can only be cleaned by a technician. Know which design you have before you pull the fridge out. Finish with a gasket and door-seal check.
