GE Profile Arctica side-by-side refrigerators (PSS/PSH/PSC): quick sheet
Covers: GE Profile Arctica side-by-side refrigerators, introduced on the GE Profile line in 2001 and sold for several years after (common models start PSS25, PSS26, PSH23 and similar). The end year was not stated by GE. Date each unit from the serial (GE month/year letters).
Electronic-control GE side-by-sides with a temperature panel and a separate dispenser board, a motorized damper feeding the fresh-food side, Adaptive Defrost (based on door openings and compressor run time), a Custom Cool drawer damper, and an electronic icemaker. Typical calls: fresh food too warm or too cold (damper), freezer frost and melted ice cream (defrost or thermistor placement), freezing in pans or a frozen water tank from airflow, and water hammer at the inlet valve. The panel has a self-test mode that runs damper, fan, defrost and reset tests.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels, fans or heaters.
- Water off before the valve or lines.
- Never chip ice off the coil.
- Sealed-system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Main airflow: one evaporator in the freezer; a motorized damper door meters air to the fresh-food side. A damper stuck or broken open over-cools the fresh-food side; stuck closed leaves it warm.
Adaptive Defrost: GE says the control decides when to defrost from door openings and compressor run time. A defrost heater with a thermistor and a safety thermostat on the coil ends the heat.
Fans stop when either door opens and restart after about 3 minutes if the door stays open (GE).
The Custom Cool drawer has its own damper behind the lowest drawer; broken gear teeth cause a short random hammering noise.
Self-test mode reaches damper, fan, run-time, defrost and reset tests without taking anything apart.
