GE GYE22GYN 22.1 cu ft counter-depth French-door refrigerator (GYE22GYNFS / GYE22GENDS): quick sheet
Covers: GE GYE22GYN** 36-inch counter-depth French door with a bottom freezer drawer and an exterior ice and water dispenser: GYE22GYNFS (fingerprint-resistant stainless) and the GYE22GENDS black slate variant on the same body. GE's product page now says the model is no longer manufactured; years on the market are approx. 2019-2025 (inferred from listings; no official launch date found). For build-date reading from the serial number see the guide find-model-and-serial-number-on-any-appliance.
Counter-depth GE French door with TwinChill dual evaporators (one for fresh food, one for the freezer), a door-mounted ice maker in the left door, a full-width temperature-controlled drawer, external controls and Wi-Fi (SmartHQ). Service is the GE French-door pattern: door ice compartment issues, filter/water flow problems, defrost faults and condenser airflow. A second freezer ice maker can be added with the IM5D kit. Deeper diagnostics are in the GE side-by-side and French-door field service manual.
Safety first
- Unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its circuit) before removing panels, the machine-compartment cover or any harness.
- Close the water supply before working on the inlet valve, filter head or door water lines; keep towels down.
- Sealed system (compressor, condenser, evaporator tubing, refrigerant): diagnosis only. Charging, brazing or opening the system is EPA 608 work for a certified technician.
- Never chip ice off the evaporator with tools; a punctured tube vents refrigerant and ends the repair.
- Defrost heaters and metal frames get hot; let them cool before handling.
- Get help moving the unit: these refrigerators weigh well over 300 lb.
How it works
Two evaporators: the fresh-food section and the freezer each have their own coil and fan, so a warm fresh-food complaint is not automatically a freezer airflow problem like on single-evaporator units.
The ice maker sits in an insulated compartment in the left fresh-food door; cold air is ducted to it, and ice drops to the exterior dispenser (cubed or crushed).
Water passes through an RPWFE-type filter in the fresh-food section to the door dispenser and the ice maker. Retailers note XWFE may also fit; the compartment label is the authority.
Frost Guard defrost (retailer spec) melts evaporator frost on a schedule controlled by the main board; meltwater drains to a pan over the condenser.
Turbo Cool and Turbo Freeze temporarily raise cooling after loading; the door alarm sounds if a door stays open.
