GE GTS / GTH top-freezer refrigerators (GTS18, GTH18, GTS21/22 and kin): quick sheet
Covers: GE 28-30 in top-freezer refrigerators with model numbers starting GTS or GTH (for example GTS18F, GTS18G, GTH18E, GTH18G, GTS21F, GTS22K), sold through the 2000s and 2010s; Hotpoint top-freezers of the same era share most parts. GE's own pages date individual models (for example GTH18EBB built February to April 2011), so date each unit from its serial number. The exact span of the whole GTS/GTH family was not confirmed by two sources.
Simple, high-volume GE top-freezers: one evaporator behind the freezer back wall, an evaporator fan that feeds the fresh-food section through an air control, a defrost heater and thermostat with a timer or control, and a condenser fan and compressor at the bottom. Icemaker-ready units take the GE IM4D/IM6D accessory kit. Repair sources agree that defrost faults are the most common call on these, followed by the evaporator fan and a dirty condenser.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing the freezer panel, fans, heaters or the timer.
- Never chip ice off the coil with tools.
- Sealed refrigerant system work (compressor, leaks, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom, protect the food and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
One evaporator in the freezer. Fresh-food cooling depends on the evaporator fan moving air through the air control between the sections, so a warm fresh-food section with a cold freezer usually means airflow (frost, fan or air control) rather than the sealed system.
Defrost: a heater under the coil, a defrost thermostat on the coil and a timer or control that schedules it. Many GTH18 variants list a defrost timer in their parts breakdown. When the heater, thermostat or timer fails, frost builds until airflow stops; owners report both sections going warm over a few days.
Icemaker-ready cabinets: GE says the IM4D kit fits most icemaker-ready top-freezer and bottom-freezer models made since 2001 (not side-by-sides), and the kit includes the icemaker, bucket, fill tube and water valve. A unit that takes the IM4 or IM4A cannot use the IM4D, and the reverse.
Serial date code: the first letter of a GE serial is the month and the second is the year (letters repeat every 12 years, so use the model era to pick the decade).
