Galanz Retro GLR refrigerators: compact chiller units (GLR33MR) and 10-12 cu ft frost-free top freezers (GLR10TR / GLR12TR): quick sheet
Covers: Galanz Retro refrigerators sold in the US in Hot Rod Red, Vinyl Black, Bebop Blue, Surf Green and white: the GLR33MR single-door compact with a full-width chiller (3.3 cu ft, manual defrost, e.g. GLR33MRDR10) and the 24 in wide apartment top-freezers GLR10TRDEFR (10 cu ft, about 7.4 + 2.4 cu ft) and GLR12TRDEFR (12 cu ft, about 9.4 + 2.7 cu ft), frost-free with an electrical thermostat control. Other retro compacts (two-door 3.1 and 4.6 cu ft) exist; read the label.
Style-driven units in apartments, ADUs, offices and game rooms. The compact GLR33MR is a simple single-door manual-defrost box with a chiller; the 10-12 cu ft top-freezers are frost-free with a true freezer. Field complaints are frost on manual-defrost compacts, uneven cooling in the fresh-food side of the top-freezers, and parts availability (some owners report model-specific parts are hard to get), which makes the repair-or-replace call important.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels or testing parts.
- R-600a is flammable: no flames or sparks near the compressor area on a leak complaint.
- Never chip ice off the chiller or coil.
- Sealed-system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
GLR33MR compact: single door, full-width chiller compartment at the top (retailer range about 27-37 F), fresh food about 32-47 F, mechanical dial thermostat, manual defrost. The Galanz user manual (as summarized in search results; the PDF link was not reachable) says to defrost once the frost reaches about 1/4 in and never to use sharp tools.
GLR10TR / GLR12TR: two doors, true top freezer at 0 F or below, fresh food about 32-47 F, frost-free (automatic) defrost, adjustable electrical thermostat control. Fresh-food cooling depends on air coming from the freezer side, so a frosted coil or a blocked air path shows up as a warm fresh-food section first.
Refrigerant is R-600a (isobutane) on the listings that state it: flammable, sealed-system work is referral only.
