Compressor coolers with an R600a sealed system, internal fans (Zephyr calls it Active Cooling), automatic defrost, carbon air filters, a child lock in the front vent, and a capacitive touch panel with alarms, a demo mode and a Sabbath mode. Many no-cool calls are a demo mode left on from the showroom, a misaligned door magnet after a hinge swap, or a blocked front grille.

Safety first

Flammable refrigerant (R600a): do not damage tubing, no sharp tools on frost, keep flames away; sealed-system work only by an EPA 608 certified technician with flammable-refrigerant training.
Unplug before cleaning or service; grounded outlet only. Zephyr allows an extension cord only if it is a listed 3-wire grounded cord rated at least 10 A at 115 V and checked by a technician; best practice is no extension cord.
Indoor use only; not for outdoor installs.

How it works

Each zone has its own sensor; the control runs the compressor and fans to hold the set point. The R indicator lights when the compressor is running.

The door switch is a magnet at the bottom of the door and a sensor in the toe kick. It drives the lights and the door alarm (beeps and 00 after 3 minutes open). After a door-swing reversal the magnet must move to the other end of the door.

Auto-defrost handles normal frost, but cold set points in a humid room can still build frost. A gurgle as the door closes is air pulling in through the condensate drain cup and tube while pressure equalizes (Zephyr says normal).

Air enters and leaves through the front vent at the base, which is why these units can be built in with no side or top gap. Blocking that vent causes high temperatures.

After any power interruption the compressor has a 3 to 5 minute restart delay; settings are kept in memory.

Wine cooler or beverage center won't turn on (dead display, no lights, no fan)

Start with the supply: tripped GFCI or breaker, a switched outlet, an extension cord or power strip, or a loose plug behind an undercounter unit. Then check that the unit's own controls are switched on. Only then move to the cord, an internal fuse, the power supply on the control board, and the board itself. An outlet can be protected by a GFCI located elsewhere on the circuit, so check other GFCIs nearby.

Air temperature in any cooler rises and falls as the compressor cycles, during defrost and after door openings; a few degrees is normal and some makers accept about 6-8 F. Measure product temperature, not air, using a probe in a bottle or glass of water for 24 hours, then decide whether there is a real sensor, seal or airflow problem.
