High-end built-ins with dual-zone wine compartments and front-breathing kickplate condensers. Sub-Zero's published first step for almost every code is a 30-second breaker reset, then factory-certified service. Sealed-system codes go straight to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

Each zone has its own thermistor; the control runs the compressor and evaporator fan to hold each setpoint. A warm or cold zone alarm sets a code when the cabinet stays outside its range.

The condenser breathes through the front kickplate, so the front grille must stay clear. Sub-Zero shows a vacuum-condenser reminder and recommends cleaning every 6-12 months (more often with pets).

After condenser cleaning or a reset, Sub-Zero allows up to 24 hours for temperatures to return to normal before calling service.

UC-24 units have a Sabbath mode (hold power about 10 s) that disables lights and, on later serials, the door-ajar alarm; it persists through a power failure.

A light film that comes and goes can be normal on cold-wall units. Thick or growing ice means warm, humid air is getting in (gasket, door not closing, frequent openings), the setpoint is too cold, the unit is in a hot or poorly vented spot, or the defrost function has failed on auto-defrost models.

Air temperature in any cooler rises and falls as the compressor cycles, during defrost and after door openings; a few degrees is normal and some makers accept about 6-8 F. Measure product temperature, not air, using a probe in a bottle or glass of water for 24 hours, then decide whether there is a real sensor, seal or airflow problem.

Thermoelectric coolers move heat with a solid-state Peltier module and two heat-sink fans, so they can only pull the cabinet a limited amount below room air. Rule out a hot room, blocked airflow and dusty fins before condemning the module, its fans or the DC power supply.
