Whirlpool WFG505M0B / WFG525S0J 30-inch freestanding gas range: quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool 30-inch freestanding gas ranges with electronic touch oven control on the backguard and 120 V supply: WFG505M0B (5.1 cu. ft., under-oven broiler drawer, manual clean; revisions such as BS0/BS1/BS2, BW, BB and the later WFG505M0M) and WFG525S0J (5.0 cu. ft., in-oven top broil, self-clean; suffixes such as JS, JB, JW, JT, JV, JZ). Siblings WFG320 and WFG515 are built on similar chassis but check the ignition type per model (see overview). Electrical and ignition side only: every gas-carrying part is blocked.
These two Whirlpool ranges look alike but light the oven in different ways, and that is the first thing to establish on a no-heat call. The WFG505M0B uses a glow-bar (hot surface) oven igniter wired in series with the oven safety valve. The WFG525S0J uses direct spark ignition (DSI): spark electrodes at the bake and broil burners fired by a spark/DSI module under the control's command, and it adds a motorized self-clean door latch. Parts listings show the same DSI bake/broil electrode on WFG515-family ranges as on the WFG525S0J. Both share the cooktop spark switch/module system and an RTD oven sensor. Common calls: weak glow-bar (WFG505), DSI oven sparks but will not stay lit (WFG525), F3 sensor codes, F5 latch codes on self-clean models, and constant clicking.
Safety first
- GAS SMELL: do not operate switches, lights or phones near the range and do not light anything; shut the gas off only if safe to reach, ventilate, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Oven safety valve, gas valve, burner valves, regulator, orifices, burner tubes, LP/NG conversion and supply lines are BLOCKED: refer to a licensed gas technician.
- Unplug the range before touching igniter, electrode, spark or control wiring; spark and DSI module outputs are high voltage.
- Glow-bar current checks are done live with a hot igniter: trained techs only, keep hands clear of the burner area.
- A DSI oven that repeatedly sparks without lighting can release unburned gas: stop, ventilate and do not keep retrying.
- If the outlet's ground or polarity is wrong, have an electrician correct it; never defeat the ground prong.
- Re-engage the anti-tip bracket every time the range is moved.
How it works
Surface burners: a spark switch on each burner valve closes at LITE and powers the spark module, which fires all the surface electrodes together. Moisture or a cracked switch keeps the module powered and causes constant clicking.
WFG505M0B oven (glow-bar): on a Bake call the control sends 120 V through the hot-surface igniter and the oven safety valve in series. The valve opens only when the igniter is hot enough to pass enough current, so a weak igniter can glow for well over a minute with no flame. The bake burner is hidden under the oven floor; the broiler drawer is underneath the oven.
WFG525S0J oven (DSI): there is no glow. The control calls for heat, the spark/DSI module sparks the bake (or broil) electrode and the gas valve opens; the module then needs to sense the flame through the electrode. If flame is not proven it retries and then shuts the system down. Poor ground, a dirty or cracked electrode, clogged burner ports or a weak module all cause 'lights then goes out' complaints. Rated about 16,500 BTU bake and 10,000 BTU broil (top of the oven).
Both ovens: the electronic control reads the RTD sensor and cycles the burner to hold setpoint. On self-clean models the control drives the door latch motor, confirms the latch switch, then runs the high-heat clean. Whirlpool range faults show as F-codes with an E-subcode (for example F3 E0).
Temperature offset is set from the keypad, but Whirlpool uses several entry methods depending on the control (Settings/Tools menu, holding Bake about 5 seconds, or holding the Temp down arrow); the limit is about ±30°F. Use the owner's manual or Whirlpool's calibration help page for the exact keys on the unit in front of you.
