GE JGBS66 / JGB735 30-inch freestanding gas range: quick sheet
Covers: GE 30-inch freestanding gas ranges with electronic touch oven control and 120 V supply: JGBS66 (and the lower JGBS60/JGBS61 family) with an under-oven broiler drawer and steam clean, and JGB735 (plus the JGB635/JGB645/JGB660 family) with an in-oven broil burner and self-clean. JGB735 adds a rear convection fan and No Preheat Air Fry. Finish/revision suffixes vary (SS, BB, WW, ES, DS and revision digits); confirm features against the rating label. Electrical and ignition side only: every gas-carrying part is blocked.
Two GE gas platforms share the same basic electrical design: a 120 V electronic range control (ERC) that runs flat glow-bar oven igniters, a surface spark module fed by spark switches on the burner valves, and an RTD oven sensor. The split techs need to know: JGBS66/JGBS60 ranges have ONE oven burner and igniter that cook and broil (broil happens in the drawer under the oven) and no lock motor; JGB735 and its siblings have separate bake and broil burners, each with its own igniter, plus a motorized self-clean door lock, and the JGB735 adds a convection fan. Most calls are a weak oven igniter, a sensor F-code, constant clicking from a wet spark switch, or an F9 lock fault after self-clean.
Safety first
- GAS SMELL: do not operate switches, lights or phones near the range and do not light anything; shut the gas off only if safe to reach, ventilate, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Oven safety valve, burner valves, regulator, orifices, LP/NG conversion and supply lines are BLOCKED: refer to a licensed gas technician.
- Unplug the range before touching igniter, spark or control wiring; the spark module output is high voltage.
- Igniter current checks are done live with a hot igniter: trained techs only, keep hands clear of the burner area.
- If clicking will not stop, unplug the range; continuous sparking near a burner can ignite leaking gas.
- Re-engage the anti-tip bracket every time the range is pulled out and pushed back.
How it works
Surface burners: each burner valve carries a spark switch on its stem. Turning any knob to LITE closes that switch and sends 120 V to the spark module, which fires all the electrodes at once, so every burner clicks. Releasing the knob from LITE opens the switch and the clicking stops.
Oven (glow-bar system): on a Bake or Broil call the control closes its relay and sends 120 V through the igniter, which is wired in series with the oven safety valve. The valve only opens once the hot igniter passes enough current, so a worn igniter can glow orange and still never open the valve. The control cycles the igniter circuit on and off to hold setpoint using the RTD sensor reading.
JGBS66 / JGBS60 (broiler-drawer layout): GE lists one combined bake/broil rating (about 18,000 BTU on natural gas), meaning the same burner and igniter do both jobs; Broil Hi/Lo is food placed in the drawer under that burner. There is no self-clean lock; the JGBS66 offers a low-heat steam clean.
JGB735 (in-oven broil layout): a bake burner under the oven floor (about 16,000 BTU NG) and a broil burner at the oven ceiling (about 13,500 BTU NG, about 12,000 BTU LP), each with its own igniter switched by the control. Convection Bake and Air Fry add a rear fan to move the burner heat. Self-clean drives a motorized lock and confirms lock position through switches before the high-heat cycle starts.
Calibration and preferences sit in GE's SF (special features) menu, entered from the keypad. It shifts the bake temperature only; it is not a component-test mode.
