Sony BRAVIA 8 OLED (XR80, 2024): quick sheet

Covers: Sony BRAVIA 8 (2024) 4K OLED Google TVs: K-55XR80, K-65XR80, K-77XR80. The BRAVIA 8 II (2025) is a different QD-OLED platform; do not mix parts.

Cross-checkedBrands: Sony4 components

Sony's 2024 mainstream OLED: WOLED panel, XR processor, Google TV, 120 Hz. Only two of the four HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.1 (4K 120, VRR, ALLM), and one of those carries eARC. OLED call types: image retention, a console on the wrong input, and the usual power/main-board blocks. Deep diagnostics: see the OLED TV field service manual.

Safety first

  • Unplug and wait before opening.
  • OLED panels break if twisted; carry upright with two people.
  • Live tests on the power board are caution work.

How it works

OLED pixels make their own light; there is no backlight. A 'sound but black screen' on an OLED is not a backlight fault; it points to panel power, the main board or the panel timing electronics.

The power board feeds the main board (Google TV, HDMI, processing) and the panel electronics. Sony sets report many faults with a blinking front LED; count the blinks before opening.

OLED panels run maintenance (pixel refresh) cycles while in standby; unplugging the TV right after use can skip them.

TVs: standby LED blink patterns, why they are model-specific, and how to use them

Some makers use the standby LED as a self-diagnosis output. Sony, for example, repeats a group of blinks with a pause, and the count names a fault area. The meaning of a count depends on the maker and the chassis, so one model's table does not apply to another. Samsung's support simply says that if the red light still blinks after a power cycle on a known-good outlet, the set needs service. Use the blink only to separate power-delivery problems from internal faults and to point to a board.

TV antenna finds no channels (or loses channels after a scan)

Most antenna problems are setup and signal, not a bad tuner: wrong input or scan type, a loose or damaged coax, an unpowered amplifier, an antenna in a poor spot, a splitter that cuts the signal, or a signal so strong it overloads the tuner. Stations also move or change format, so a rescan is the first step any time channels disappear.

TV talks: a voice reads every menu or describes the show

This is an accessibility feature that was switched on, often by accident through a remote shortcut (holding Mute or Volume, or pressing Star several times). A voice reading menus is the screen reader (Voice Guide, Audio Guidance, Screen reader). A voice describing the show is audio description, which may be a TV setting or the streaming app's audio track. Nothing is broken.
