TVs: standby LED blink patterns, why they are model-specific, and how to use them

Some makers use the standby LED as a self-diagnosis output. Sony, for example, repeats a group of blinks with a pause, and the count names a fault area. The meaning of a count depends on the maker and the chassis, so one model's table does not apply to another. Samsung's support simply says that if the red light still blinks after a power cycle on a known-good outlet, the set needs service. Use the blink only to separate power-delivery problems from internal faults and to point to a board.

Before you start

  • Do not open the back of a TV unless trained: power-supply capacitors and backlight drivers hold dangerous voltage after unplugging
  • Internal checks are caution: discharge and insulated tools only
