Liberty Pumps 230 and 450 series aluminum submersible sump pumps (237, 231, 233, 457, 451, 453): quick sheet
Covers: Liberty Pumps (Bergen, NY) polypropylene base / finned powder-coated aluminum motor sump pumps: 230-Series 1/3 HP (230 manual, 230-P with unmounted vertical piggyback switch, 231 integral wide-angle float, 233 wide-angle piggyback, 237 vertical magnetic float 'VMF') and 450-Series 1/2 HP (450, 450-P, 451, 453, 457 VMF). HV = 230 V versions; suffix -2/-3/-5 = 25/35/50 ft cord. Same installation manual also covers the 240-series 1/4 HP cast iron (not detailed here). Model, serial and manufacture date are on the pump nameplate; record them on the manual cover. Search terms: Liberty 237, Liberty 457, Liberty 230 series sump pump, Liberty VMF switch, Liberty sump pump won't shut off, Liberty sump pump airlock.
Lightweight, oil-filled PSC submersible pumps with a finned aluminum motor housing for cooling, a thermoplastic vortex impeller and a removable base that lets the pump draw down to about 1/8 in. The 237 and 457 carry Liberty's vertical magnetic float switch and fit pits as small as 10 in.; the wide-angle versions need a 14 in. pit. A quick-connect cord can be swapped without opening the motor. Liberty does not authorize field repair inside the pump during warranty, so field work is switch, piping, airlock and cleaning.
Safety first
- Unplug before handling the pump, float or pit water. If there is water on the floor and the pump is energized, wear dielectric boots and stay out of water deeper than your protection.
- Use a properly grounded, separate branch circuit; no extension cords; outlet at least 4 ft above the floor for below-grade installs. Do not splice the cord (a junction box is allowed).
- Do not raise the float with metal or reach into a live pit with conductive tools.
- Liberty submersible sump pumps are for clear storm and ground water only, not sewage, sand, cement or chemicals.
- Field disassembly of the pump itself voids the warranty; use a Liberty authorized service center (1-800-543-2550).
How it works
VMF models (237, 457): a float on a vertical rod moves a magnet that operates the switch in the housing on top of the pump. Do not remove the float rod to run the pump manually; Liberty says that damages the switch.
Wide-angle models: 231/451 have the float wired into the pump; 233/453 have a separate float with a piggyback plug, so the pump can be unplugged from the switch and plugged straight into the wall for temporary manual running.
Manual models (230, 450) have no switch; keep at least 4-1/2 in. of water over the intake and set any outside control to turn off no lower than that.
An anti-airlock hole in the volute bleeds trapped air so the pump can prime against the column of water held by the check valve. A small spray from it is normal and bleeding can take from a few seconds to over a minute. Liberty also suggests a 1/8 in. hole in the discharge pipe just above the pump connection.
Performance from Liberty's curves: 230-Series about 44 GPM open flow, about 30 GPM at 10 ft, shut-off about 21 ft. 450-Series about 52 GPM open flow, about 30 GPM at 20 ft, shut-off about 32-34 ft.
