Basement Watchdog Combo systems (Big Combo CONNECT CITS-50, Combo CITE-33): quick sheet
Covers: Factory-assembled primary + 12 V battery backup sump systems made by Glentronics under the Basement Watchdog name: Big Combo CONNECT CITS-50 (1/2 HP cast iron primary, BWSP-A 'Special CONNECT' backup controller with remote terminal and USB port) and Combo CITE-33 (1/3 HP cast iron primary, simpler backup controller). Both use a caged dual-float switch with a blue piggyback 'Dual Float Controller' on the primary and a dual float on the backup. Current manuals are dated 2025; older units sold under the same names may have different controllers, so match the controller model on its label (for example BWSP-A) to the manual. Model and serial labels: on the back of the black backup control unit, on the blue piggyback controller, and on the primary pump nameplate. Battery is sold separately (Basement Watchdog recommends its BW-27AGM). Search terms: Basement Watchdog Big Combo, CITS-50, CITE-33, Watchdog combo beeping, Watchdog battery light, Watchdog fuse light, Basement Watchdog reset button.
A one-piece pit assembly: an AC cast iron primary pump and a smaller DC backup pump share a wye fitting that ties into one 1-1/2 in. discharge, each with its own built-in check valve. The primary runs from the wall through a blue piggyback controller fed by a caged dual float. The backup runs from a deep-cycle battery through a black control unit that sits on the battery box, charges the battery, watches power, battery and pump, and sounds an alarm with a lit panel light that names the problem. On CITS-50 the controller also exercises the backup pump weekly and has dry-contact and USB (Wi-Fi module) outputs. Most service calls are an alarm that won't stop, a backup pump that ran because the primary failed, or a dead battery.
Safety first
- Unplug the primary and the charger, and disconnect the battery, before reaching into the pit or handling the pumps.
- Lead-acid batteries vent explosive gas and contain acid: no sparks or flames, fan the battery top with cardboard before working on it, remove rings and watches, do not drop tools across the posts, wear eye protection.
- Connecting the battery cables to the wrong posts damages the controller. Red to (+) first, then black to (-).
- Never charge the battery with an outside charger while it is still connected to the Watchdog controller; disconnect the controller first or it will be destroyed.
- Ground water only: not for sewage, flammable liquids or salt water.
How it works
Primary pump: water lifts the lower ring float in the cage by about 1/4 in. and the blue Dual Float Controller powers the pump. If that float sticks, the upper float starts the pump when the water reaches it. After the activating float drops, the controller keeps the pump running about 10 more seconds to empty the pit (Basement Watchdog manual; single source).
Backup pump: it starts only when its own dual float rises, which happens when the power is out, the primary has failed, or inflow is more than the primary can handle. A timer runs it about 25 seconds after the float drops (Basement Watchdog manual; an independent repair guide also cites about 25 s).
Built-in check valves: 1-1/2 in. on the primary and 1-1/4 in. on the backup. Remove the old house check valve when installing; the system does not need it. Small air-bleed holes (top of the primary and in the backup check valve elbow) spray water while pumping; that is normal and prevents air lock.
Controller (BWSP-A on CITS-50): runs on wall power through a plug-in charger and on battery when the power is out. It charges the battery automatically (Charging light solid while charging, flashing while holding the battery at full charge), sounds an alarm and lights Battery, Fuse, Pump or Power when there is a problem, and keeps a System Operating light on whenever it has power from the wall or the battery.
The battery runs only the backup pump. The primary has no power during an outage.
