Zoeller M53 Mighty-Mate and M98 Flow-Mate sump pumps: quick sheet

Covers: Zoeller cast-iron submersible sump pumps with the integral float in a switch case: M53 (3/10 HP) and M98 (1/2 HP), 115 V automatic versions; the same switch case family appears on M57/M63/D-series and some N (effluent) variants. Cord length and LED plug vary by SKU.

The most common contractor-installed sump pumps in the US. The float, rod/arm and microswitch live in a sealed cast-iron switch case on the side of the motor, so the pump turns itself on and off with no external float to snag. Most failures are in that switch assembly or in the discharge plumbing, not the oil-filled motor.

Safety first

  • Unplug before touching the pump or reaching into the pit
  • Never handle a plugged-in pump in water
  • Sump water can be contaminated: gloves and eye protection
  • Don't run a bypass test dry for more than a few minutes

How it works

Water rises in the pit and lifts the polypropylene float on the side of the pump. The float works a sealed snap-action switch through an arm and rubber seal; at the on level the motor starts, and it stops when water falls to the off level.

The motor is oil-filled for cooling and lubrication and drives a vortex impeller that passes small solids (1/2 in on the M98). Zoeller lists automatic-reset thermal overload protection on the Mighty-Mate family.

Water leaves through a 1-1/2 in NPT vertical discharge. A check valve above the pump stops the column from falling back; a small relief hole between pump and check valve prevents air lock.

Because the switch is integral, the pump runs whenever it is plugged directly into power with the float up. Variable-level (piggyback) and non-automatic versions use an external switch instead.
