Low-cost, one-person-install 120 V hoods for 12 in. deep cabinets (filler kits for 15 in. cabinets). They can vent vertically through a 3-1/4 x 10 in. rectangular or 7 in. round duct, horizontally through a 3-1/4 x 10 in. rear outlet, or recirculate with a charcoal filter. The blower is a plug-in assembly behind the grease filter; a loose blower plug from installation is GE's first suspect when lights work but the fan does not.

Safety first

  • Breaker off and surfaces cool before cleaning or servicing.
  • The hood must be grounded; do not use an extension cord or adapter plug; use only metal duct and vent outdoors, never into attics, walls or garages.
  • Do not use a solid-state speed control with these hoods.
  • Do not touch hot lamps, or touch lamps with wet hands or cloths.
  • No gas parts on these hoods; anything about the range's gas side goes to a licensed gas technician.

How it works

House wiring enters a junction box in the hood (black to black, white to white, green to the green ground screw). An optional JXHC1 cord kit allows plug-in to a grounded outlet.

The blower assembly connects to the control through a plug-in connector; the control switches the motor speeds and lights. JVX3300-class units use simple Light On/Off and Hi/Lo/Off switches; JVX5300 and PVX7300 use electronic buttons or glass touch pads.

On 4-speed models the Off key held for 3 seconds sets auto-off after 15 minutes, and the Hi key held for 3 seconds runs boost speed for 10 minutes before dropping back.

PVX7300/PVX7360 Chef Connect pairs over Bluetooth with a compatible GE range or cooktop; when the range sends a command the hood turns its light and fan on at the stored default sync settings (factory: light brightest, fan off).

Air passes the dishwasher-safe metal grease filter, the blower, and a damper/duct connector set for top-rectangular, top-round (7 in. adapter) or rear exhaust. In recirculating mode no knockouts are removed and a charcoal filter is screwed under the blower.

Water dripping from the range hood (condensation in the hood or duct, cold-weather backdraft)

Warm, humid cooking air condenses on cold hood surfaces and on ductwork running through a cold attic, wall or roof. Some condensation while boiling or steaming is normal. Steady dripping usually means weak capture or airflow (dirty filters, low speed, a stuck damper, a blocked cap), an uninsulated or too-long duct, or cold outside air leaking back in when the hood is off. Water that is clearly rain coming down the duct is a roof or cap problem.

Range hood over 400 CFM: does the job need makeup air? (IRC M1503.6 check before you sell the hood)

Under the IRC kitchen makeup-air section (M1503.6 in recent editions, M1503.4 in 2009), a hood able to exhaust more than 400 CFM needs makeup air at roughly the same rate, with at least one damper that is gravity or motorized and opens automatically when the hood runs. Recent editions apply it only when the home has a fuel-burning appliance inside the air barrier that is neither direct-vent nor mechanically drafted (e.g., a natural-draft water heater or a wood fireplace). States and cities amend this, so the local code office decides. This guide is a pre-sale and diagnosis check, not an HVAC design.

Choosing a range hood: CFM rule of thumb, hood width and mounting height

Rules of thumb used across the industry: for gas, about 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU of total burner output (total BTU divided by 100); for electric, about 100 CFM per linear foot of cooktop width (10 CFM per inch). Make the hood at least as wide as the cooktop, and wider (about 3 in each side) on gas and island installs. Mount it inside the height range in the hood's own installation instructions, because capture drops fast when a hood is mounted too high. Then check makeup air if the result is over 400 CFM.
