A stainless power pack that the cabinetmaker or installer builds into a custom canopy. The PK22 carries two brushless DC (BLDC) blowers driven by one electronic drive and a pushbutton control with 4 fan speeds (speed 4 acts as the top / boost setting), 3 light levels, a 10-minute delay-off, a 25-hour filter-clean reminder and a Heat Sentry thermostat. Its iQ12 system has a one-time airflow calibration button that measures duct restriction after install. The HBN22 replacement keeps the 10 in. round vertical discharge and Heat Sentry but moves to an 8-speed capacitive slider, LED modules, a 30-hour filter reminder, automatic real-time airflow calibration, and Code Ready Technology (CRT) that can permanently cap airflow for make-up-air codes.

Safety first

  • Turn power off at the service panel and lock or tag it before servicing; the Heat Sentry can start the blower by itself.
  • Wiring must be done by qualified personnel; the unit must be grounded; use metal duct only and duct to the outdoors.
  • Do not use any solid-state speed control with these power packs.
  • Lamps get hot; let them cool before touching.
  • High-CFM hoods may need make-up air; check local code before raising airflow or after changing CRT settings.
  • Two people are recommended to lift the power pack (about 50-57 lb with internal blowers).

How it works

PK22: two 600 CFM BLDC blower wheels share one electronic drive board and a control interface board; a 120 V AC to 9 V DC transformer powers the low-voltage side. Air leaves through a 10 in. round adapter with a vertical backdraft damper (Best model 421) installed in the vertical duct, ideally 17 in. or more above the power pack.

iQ12 calibration (PK22 only, not PKEX22): after the duct, filters and lamps are installed, the installer holds the calibration button so the blower runs a measured cycle (up to about 13 minutes) and stores the result. A steady light at the end means rated airflow was reached; a blinking light means the duct is too restrictive and the drive defaults to maximum effort.

Heat Sentry: a thermostat in the power pack takes over the blower when it senses excess heat. On the PK22 it locks out speed 4 for 10 minutes and holds speed 3; on the HBN22 it raises the blower to high (Best lists about 200 F exhaust temperature as the trigger). It can start the fan even when the hood is off, and the fan buttons cannot stop it.

PKEX22 has no blower inside: it only carries controls, lights, filters and an autotransformer/fuse kit, and feeds a remote in-line or exterior Best blower through a male/female power connector pair. Only the listed Best blowers may be used; with the ILB3, ILB6 or EB6 the cooktop below must be rated 60,000 Btu/hr or less.

HBN22: a capacitive slider sets 8 fan speeds; the True iQ drive adjusts in real time to hold the rated 1240 TrueCFM despite restrictions; an IR/air-quality sensor runs AUTO (SmartSense) mode from cooktop heat, humidity and VOCs. CRT can cap maximum airflow at 300, 400 or 600 CFM for make-up-air code compliance, and that change cannot be undone.

Water dripping from the range hood (condensation in the hood or duct, cold-weather backdraft)

Warm, humid cooking air condenses on cold hood surfaces and on ductwork running through a cold attic, wall or roof. Some condensation while boiling or steaming is normal. Steady dripping usually means weak capture or airflow (dirty filters, low speed, a stuck damper, a blocked cap), an uninsulated or too-long duct, or cold outside air leaking back in when the hood is off. Water that is clearly rain coming down the duct is a roof or cap problem.

Range hood over 400 CFM: does the job need makeup air? (IRC M1503.6 check before you sell the hood)

Under the IRC kitchen makeup-air section (M1503.6 in recent editions, M1503.4 in 2009), a hood able to exhaust more than 400 CFM needs makeup air at roughly the same rate, with at least one damper that is gravity or motorized and opens automatically when the hood runs. Recent editions apply it only when the home has a fuel-burning appliance inside the air barrier that is neither direct-vent nor mechanically drafted (e.g., a natural-draft water heater or a wood fireplace). States and cities amend this, so the local code office decides. This guide is a pre-sale and diagnosis check, not an HVAC design.

Choosing a range hood: CFM rule of thumb, hood width and mounting height

Rules of thumb used across the industry: for gas, about 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU of total burner output (total BTU divided by 100); for electric, about 100 CFM per linear foot of cooktop width (10 CFM per inch). Make the hood at least as wide as the cooktop, and wider (about 3 in each side) on gas and island installs. Mount it inside the height range in the hood's own installation instructions, because capture drops fast when a hood is mounted too high. Then check makeup air if the result is over 400 CFM.
