GE Disposall continuous-feed disposers (GFC525V / GFC720V / GFC1020V and N-suffix successors): quick sheet
Covers: GE-branded Disposall continuous-feed disposers: GFC525V / GFC525N (1/2 HP, corded), GFC720V (3/4 HP), GFC1020V (1 HP) and similar GFC models. The V-suffix models are discontinued; replacements carry other suffixes. Model is on the label on the side or bottom of the unit.
Big-box GE disposers with EZ Mount installation, a manual-reset overload protector and a galvanized steel turntable on the 1/2 HP model. Service is the same as any continuous-feed disposer: wall switch / power, reset button, jam, leaks. A tech-reported quirk is that some GE units lack the 1/4 in hex socket on the bottom that other brands use to free a jam, so the jam has to be worked from the top. Check the unit before promising the hex-key fix.
Safety first
- Power off at the breaker before reaching into the chamber with any tool; never use a hand.
- Voltage checks at the switched outlet are caution.
- A unit leaking from the body near the electrical cover should be unplugged and replaced.
How it works
A wall switch powers an induction motor that spins the turntable; swivel lugs fling food against a stationary grind ring and the slurry exits the discharge elbow.
A manual-reset thermal overload (red button on the bottom) opens when the motor overheats or stalls on a jam. It must cool before it will reset.
EZ Mount: the unit hangs on a sink mounting assembly and is turned onto it, so a leak at the top is usually the sink flange/mount, not the body.
The dishwasher inlet is a knockout on the side (remove the plug before connecting a dishwasher); GE spec sheets for the 525V list a 3/4 in or 1 in inlet depending on the revision.
