The Badger line is InSinkErator's entry-level, single-stage disposal sold at big-box stores and in builder-grade kitchens. It uses a 1725 RPM induction motor, galvanized-steel grind parts on most trims, a manual-reset overload, and the Quick Lock 3-bolt sink mount shared with the rest of the InSinkErator line. Because the mount and drain connections are common, a Badger swaps to a higher model without changing the sink flange.

Safety first

  • Never put a hand in the grinding chamber; use tongs
  • Turn off and unplug, or turn off the breaker on hardwired units, before any under-sink work
  • Verify the circuit is dead with a non-contact tester before opening the electrical plate
  • Do not keep pressing reset on a unit that hums; it overheats the motor

How it works

A split-phase induction motor spins a turntable at about 1725 RPM. Two swivel lugs (impellers) on the turntable throw food against a stationary grind ring, which shreds it into particles small enough to flush. There are no blades; InSinkErator stresses that the lugs and grind ring do the work.

Badger units are single-stage grinders. InSinkErator says its standard units handle most food waste but struggle with stringy, fibrous scraps such as banana peel, celery and rhubarb; those are what wrap the lugs and slow lower-power units.

The motor is protected by a manual-reset thermal overload: a red button on the bottom of the unit pops down about 1/4 in when it trips. It trips on a jam, a long run or other faults, and must be pressed back in after the motor cools.

The unit hangs from the Quick Lock mount: a sink flange and snap ring above, a mounting ring with three screws below, and a lower ring with ramps that the disposal's tabs lock onto when twisted. The discharge tube exits the side; a dishwasher inlet on the upper housing ships with a knockout plug that must be removed when a dishwasher drain is connected.
