Field pattern: 'disposal is dead, needs a new one' (reset, jam and power first; a leaking body is the real replace)

Most dead or humming disposals are a jam that tripped the overload, a tripped GFCI or breaker, or a wall or air switch fault. Freeing the flywheel with the hex key and pressing the reset button is the first step. The opposite trap is fixing a jam on a unit that leaks from the body; that one needs replacing.

Before you start

  • Turn off power at the switch and the breaker, or unplug the disposal, before reaching into or under it
  • Never put a hand into the grinding chamber; use tongs or pliers
  • Wiring connections at the disposal and the switch are line voltage; verify zero voltage before opening the cover plate
