Field pattern: disposal 'leaking from the bottom, replace it' (rule out elbow gasket and hoses before condemning)
A true leak from the body (often at the reset button or bottom cover) means the internal seals or housing failed, and the unit gets replaced because those seals are not sold as parts. But water from a dishwasher hose, a loose discharge elbow or a bad elbow gasket can run down the shell and drip off the bottom too; Moen notes an elbow gasket leak can exit through the bottom plate. Do the towel test first.
Before you start
- Turn off the disposal at the switch and breaker before inspecting under it
- A unit leaking from the body near the electrical cover must stay unplugged
