GE / GE Profile 15-in built-in trash compactors (GCG1520, GCG1540, GCG1580): quick sheet
Covers: GE 15 in undercounter compactors of the GCG15xx family: GCG1520 (white/black), GCG1540 and GE Profile GCG1580 (stainless; GCG1580RSS built about Sept 2009 to July 2017), plus close revisions (F, L, P, R suffixes). Discontinued; parts support only. Model and serial on the label inside the drawer opening.
Classic 1/3 HP power-screw compactors: a key-knob start/off switch, a drawer monitor (safety) switch, an automatic thermal motor cutout, and a foot pedal to open the drawer. About a one-minute cycle. Calls are almost always 'won't start' (key, drawer, switch), 'won't stop' (top limit / directional switch), a stuck ram, and odor.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels; never reach under a ram that could move.
- Do not defeat the drawer switch for testing with the drawer open.
- Live-voltage tests are caution.
How it works
Turning the key knob to START with the drawer closed completes the circuit through the drawer monitor switch; the motor drives the power screws through a chain/gear set and the ram travels down, compacts, reverses and returns to the top.
A directional / top-limit switch, tripped by a tab on the ram, reverses the motor at the bottom and stops it at the top. If the top-limit function fails, the compactor keeps running after the cycle should end.
The drawer will not open unless the ram is fully raised. If the ram is stuck down, GE's guidance is to lift up on the foot pedal and follow the article steps rather than force the drawer.
An automatic thermal motor protector stops the motor if it overheats; wait a few minutes and restart.
