KitchenAid / Whirlpool 15-in built-in trash compactors (KTTS505E, KTTP515T and older Whirlpool GC900-class): quick sheet

Covers: Whirlpool-built 15-in undercounter compactors: KitchenAid KTTS505E (stainless / panel-ready) and the newer KTTP515T with built-in odor management, plus older Whirlpool GC900 / GX900-class and KUCS-family units that share the two-power-screw, chain-drive layout. Read the model and serial from the label inside the drawer opening.

The only full-size compactor line still widely installed in US kitchens. A motor in the bottom of the cabinet turns two vertical power screws through a chain and sprockets; nuts on the ram ride the screws down to compact and back up to park. Start logic runs through a key knob, a drawer safety switch, a tilt switch on the bin and a top-limit / directional switch, so most no-start and won't-stop calls are switch calls. Retail listings disagree on the compaction ratio (4:1 vs 5:1) and on the circuit rating, so read the install sheet for the exact model.

Safety first

  • Unplug or switch off the breaker before any test; built-in units often hide the outlet behind the cabinet.
  • Keep hands out from under the ram; never bypass the drawer or tilt switch.

How it works

Turning the key knob to start (with the drawer fully closed) energises the motor through the drawer safety switch and the start circuit. The ram travels down on the two power screws until trash resistance slows the motor.

Reversal is mechanical and electrical: when load slows the motor, the motor's centrifugal switch and the directional switch reverse the motor so the ram climbs back up. At the top, the top-limit / directional switch opens and the cycle ends.

A tilt switch on the bin reverses the ram and sends it home if the bin tilts during compaction (the bin on these units tilts out sideways for bag removal).

Odor control is a small fan with a charcoal filter on newer units, switched separately from the compaction circuit. 'Solid Pack' is a marketing name for the packing mode; listings quote up to about 80% volume reduction.
