Trash compactor won't start: test the key, drawer, tilt and top-limit switches

A compactor start circuit is a chain of switches in series. Prove the outlet first, then continuity-test each switch with the power off: on-off / key switch, momentary start, drawer safety, tilt and top-limit / directional. If every switch passes, the motor's centrifugal switch, the motor or the wiring is next.

Before you start

  • Unplug the unit or switch off the breaker before any test; built-ins often hide the outlet behind the cabinet.
  • Keep hands out from under the ram.
  • Never jumper the drawer or tilt switch to run the unit.
