Trash Compactors

Trash compactor drawer drags, sticks halfway or needs a hard push (rollers and rails)

A loaded compactor bin is heavy, and worn roller bearings or grease-caked, bent rails make it drag. Pull the drawer, clean and inspect the rails, then replace worn rollers. On many Whirlpool-family units the rear roller bearing is a bolt-on part held by a screw and nut.

Cross-checked ~40 min easyBrands: Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Kenmore (Whirlpool-built), All (general approach)

Before you start

  • Unplug the unit before removing the drawer.
  • Empty the bag first; a full bin is heavy and awkward to lift.
  • Do not over-tighten the roller nut.
