Power-screw / chain-drive trash compactors: field service manual
Covers: 15-in built-in and freestanding compactors with a motor driving two power screws through a chain and gears, key-knob or push-button controls. Own summary.
A motor under the cabinet drives a chain that turns two vertical power screws; nuts on the screws pull a ram down into the drawer and back up. Safety switches on the drawer and key/start control stop the cycle unless the drawer is shut and the key is in place.
Safety first
- Unplug the compactor (or switch off its breaker) and remove the key before reaching into the cabinet or drawer.
- Never bypass the drawer or key safety switches.
- Motor and ram work is caution: keep hands clear of the ram and support it before working under it.
How it works
Start requires power, a closed latched drawer and the key/start switch (some models add a foot-actuated start).
The motor turns the drive gear and chain, rotating both power screws; the power nuts move the ram.
A directional/top limit switch reverses the ram at full compaction and stops it at the top.
Solid/compress cycles hold the ram down and lock the drawer until released.
