Broan's compactor uses a dual power-screw drive like the Whirlpool family but with a front door-style drawer, a removable key switch and a safety interlock that blocks compaction with the door open. Broan's spec sheet lists a 3/4 HP motor while one retailer lists 1/2 HP, and retailers quote a 3000 lb compacting force and 6:1 ratio; treat those as marketing numbers.

How it works

With the key switch ON and the door closed, the unit runs and the ram travels to (or returns to) the UP position. Broan's manual uses this as the first check after unpacking or a jam.

A motor drives two power screws; the ram compacts and then returns to the top, where a limit switch ends the cycle.

A door safety interlock prevents compaction when the door is open, and the removable key prevents unauthorised use. A bag storage compartment is built in.

Trash compactor won't stop: ram keeps cycling or runs past the top

A compactor stops when the ram returns to the top and trips the top-limit/directional switch, which also tells the motor which way to run. If the ram never stops, suspect that switch or its actuator, a start/run or push-button switch stuck closed, or a motor centrifugal/reversing switch problem. Unplug before any check.

Trash compactor doesn't compact well (ram goes down but trash stays loose)

Weak compaction on a power-screw compactor usually means the ram isn't getting full force: worn or stripped power nuts, a slipping or broken drive gear or sprocket chain, or worn screws. Running the unit nearly empty is a common cause of gear damage. Inspect from below with the unit unplugged and pulled out.

A compactor start circuit is a chain of switches in series. Prove the outlet first, then continuity-test each switch with the power off: on-off / key switch, momentary start, drawer safety, tilt and top-limit / directional. If every switch passes, the motor's centrifugal switch, the motor or the wiring is next.
