Grease or liquid dripping from the range hood

Most drips are grease that has saturated the filters or collected inside the hood because the filters were not cleaned or were missing. A second pattern is steam condensing inside a duct that runs through a cold space and running back down to the hood. Clean everything, then look at filter habits and duct routing.

Hood blower hums but won't spin (capacitor)

A weak run/start capacitor or a greased-up blower wheel are the common causes. A switch fault or seized motor is next. No hum at all points to a thermal fuse, switch or supply.

Range hood controls unresponsive or acting erratically

Electronic hood controls can lock up; a full power reset clears many cases. If not, check the ribbon or harness between the control panel and the main board, then replace the control panel or board. On hoods with Bluetooth or cooktop pairing, an active pairing can make the hood switch on by itself.

Range hood damper flaps or chatters in wind

The backdraft flap is light and moves with wind pressure. Fixes: clean grease so it seals, replace worn foam stops, add a spring-loaded damper, or add light weight to the flap. Too many dampers reduce airflow.

Range hood fan not running (lights may or may not work)

Split the call by whether the lights work. Lights and fan both dead points to supply power or the house wiring; lights OK but no fan usually means a loose blower connector, a seized wheel or a failed motor. A fan that runs and then cycles off is often a motor overheating on a grease-loaded filter.

Range hood LED lights flicker or dead (driver)

Check the LED module and connector first, then the LED driver/transformer and the light switch or control. Use the exact model part.

Range hood light not working or flickering

Start with the lamp itself: swap a working lamp into the dead position to separate lamp from socket or wiring. Flicker is usually a loose connector. Repeated early burn-out on halogen/incandescent hoods points to a lamp of the wrong wattage.

Range hood loud, rattling or vibrating

Separate airflow noise (rushing, whistling) from mechanical noise (rattle, grind, wobble). Airflow noise usually comes from a restricted or undersized duct, a stuck damper or dirty filters. Mechanical noise comes from a loose part, a debris-hit or unbalanced fan wheel, or worn motor bearings.

Range hood remote not working

Usually a dead coin battery, lost pairing or range. Pairing steps and battery type differ by model and remote generation.

Range hood turns on by itself or jumps to high speed

Many hoods (e.g. Broan Heat Sentry and similar) have a heat sensor that starts the fan or raises speed when it senses excess heat. That is a safety feature, not a fault. If it runs with a cold cooktop, suspect the sensor, a stuck switch or the control.

Range hood weak suction / not clearing smoke and odor

Hoods are rarely weak by themselves; the usual causes are loaded filters, a damper that will not open, a blocked or undersized duct, too many elbows, or a house that cannot supply makeup air. A tissue test with and without the duct quickly shows whether the hood or the installation is at fault.

Recirculating hood: odors not removed / charcoal filter

Ductless hoods rely on charcoal filters that cannot be washed and lose effect over time. Grease filters must be clean or the charcoal clogs fast. Replace charcoal on the maker's schedule.

Telescopic downdraft vent will not rise (or fan will not run)

Telescopic downdrafts have a lift motor and a separate blower. Most calls are power (cord unplugged in the cabinet, breaker), an obstruction that triggered the safety stop, or a button that was tapped instead of held. The blower is normally interlocked and only runs with the vent fully up.
