Telescopic downdraft ventilation: field service manual
Covers: Pop-up (telescopic) downdraft vents installed behind a cooktop in a base cabinet, with integral, in-line or remote blowers. Detailed numbers come from GE's UVD6301/UVD6361 install guide; other brands vary.
A telescopic downdraft is a vent chimney that rises from the countertop behind the cooktop and pulls air sideways across the cooking surface, then down through filters to a blower in the base cabinet and out through ducting under the floor or through a wall. It suits islands and peninsulas where an overhead hood is not wanted, but it captures tall pots and front burners less well than a canopy hood.
Safety first
- Electrical work at the cabinet outlet is a caution step; never remove the ground prong or use an extension cord
- Keep fingers away from the top of the vent while it lowers
- Use metal duct (or code-approved PVC under a slab) and terminate outdoors only
- Refer any gas line work at the cooktop to a licensed gas professional; refer makeup-air and backdraft concerns to HVAC
How it works
A button on the top cover drives a lift (gear) motor that raises or lowers the vent. A safety stop halts travel if the vent meets an obstruction; clear it and press the button again.
The blower is interlocked with the vent position: on GE units it runs only when the vent is up and switches off automatically when the vent is lowered, starting at the last-used speed when raised.
Air passes through filters inside the vent, into a plenum and to the blower box, whose discharge can usually be rotated (down, left or right) to suit joists and plumbing.
Some product lines sell the downdraft body without a blower; the installer adds an integral blower module or an in-line/remote blower. Bosch lists recirculation as an accessory sold separately on some downdrafts.
