Range hoods (under-cabinet, wall chimney, island): ducted vs recirculating field manual

Covers: Residential 120 V range hoods with internal blowers: under-cabinet, wall-mount chimney and island canopy styles; convertible ducted/recirculating models. Concepts apply across brands; always confirm numbers in the model's install guide.

Cross-checkedBrands: Broan / NuTone, Zephyr, Cosmo, GE, Whirlpool / KitchenAid, Bosch6 components

A hood is an enclosure with a blower that captures the rising plume over the cooktop and either exhausts it outdoors (ducted) or passes it through grease and charcoal filters and returns it to the kitchen (recirculating). Ducted installs remove heat, moisture and odors; recirculating installs only trap grease and some odor. Most service calls trace back to installation (duct size, damper, makeup air) or maintenance (filters) rather than failed parts.

Safety first

  • Electrical hookup is a caution job: work with the breaker off and locked or tagged, connect black to black, white to white and ground to the green screw, and use listed wire connectors and a strain relief. If the circuit or grounding is in doubt, refer to a licensed electrician.
  • Never use a solid-state speed control on a hood unless the maker approves it
  • Use only metal ductwork; never terminate a duct in an attic, wall cavity, crawl space or garage
  • Large hoods can depressurize the house and backdraft atmospheric gas appliances, water heaters or fireplaces; follow local makeup-air rules and refer combustion-air issues to a licensed HVAC/gas professional
  • No gas work is part of hood service; any gas cooktop disconnection must be done by a licensed gas professional

How it works

The blower (one or two motors, sometimes in the hood, sometimes remote in-line or on the roof) pulls air through metal grease filters into a plenum and out through a damper/duct connector.

Ducted: air leaves through rigid metal duct to a wall or roof cap with a backdraft flap. Duct size, length, elbows and the cap set the real airflow; a hood on a long or undersized duct never reaches its rated CFM.

Recirculating: the same blower pushes air through a charcoal (activated carbon) filter and out through front or top slots. Moisture and heat stay in the kitchen.

Convertible hoods ship in one mode. Switching mode involves knockouts, a damper/duct connector, a deflector plate or vent lever, and adding or removing the charcoal filter.

Controls range from mechanical slide/rocker switches to electronic touch boards with timers, boost speed and, on some models, cooktop pairing that turns the hood on automatically.
