Range hood fan not running (lights may or may not work)
Split the call by whether the lights work. Lights and fan both dead points to supply power or the house wiring; lights OK but no fan usually means a loose blower connector, a seized wheel or a failed motor. A fan that runs and then cycles off is often a motor overheating on a grease-loaded filter.
Before you start
- Switch the hood breaker off (or unplug a corded hood) before removing filters, covers or the blower; lock or tag the panel if you cannot watch it
- Live checks at the junction box or outlet are a caution step: insulated probes, one hand, no contact with conductors
- Wear gloves: hood sheet metal and fan housings have sharp edges and grease
