Guide · Range / OvenElectric and many gas ranges and wall ovens have a cooling fan that protects the controls, door and cabinetry; it keeps running after the oven is off until the controls area cools, and cannot be switched off. Running for a while after a long or hot bake is normal; running with the oven cold, starting at power-up or never stopping points to a fan thermostat stuck closed, a welded relay, a bad temperature sensor reading or a control fault. A fan that never runs is a safety issue because the controls overheat.
Guide · Range / OvenThis is a fire hazard: turn the breaker off first, then diagnose. On electronic controls the usual cause is a relay on the control board whose contacts have welded closed. On dial ovens it is a stuck thermostat or selector contact. Less often a shorted sensor or harness is to blame. On gas ovens, a burner that won't shut off is a gas-valve problem and goes to a licensed gas technician.

Techs average readings over several cycles, use the control's temperature offset for small errors, and only replace the sensor when it fails a resistance test or the error is beyond the offset range. Replacing a good sensor (or a control) on a calibration complaint is the common wrong turn.
