Oven cooling fan keeps running after the oven is off (or never runs)
Electric and many gas ranges and wall ovens have a cooling fan that protects the controls, door and cabinetry; it keeps running after the oven is off until the controls area cools, and cannot be switched off. Running for a while after a long or hot bake is normal; running with the oven cold, starting at power-up or never stopping points to a fan thermostat stuck closed, a welded relay, a bad temperature sensor reading or a control fault. A fan that never runs is a safety issue because the controls overheat.
Before you start
- Turn the breaker off (or unplug) and let the oven cool before removing panels; the fan and its wiring sit next to hot surfaces and carry line voltage
- Live voltage checks at the board are for trained techs only
- Gas ranges: the cooling fan and its controls are electrical parts; do not touch the gas valve, regulator or burner gas parts (licensed gas technician only)
- A cooling fan that never runs lets the controls overheat: stop using the oven until it is repaired
