Whirlpool / Maytag stacked laundry center (one-piece washer below, dryer above): field service manual
Covers: Whirlpool-built 24- and 27-inch one-piece laundry centers (WET/YWET electric and WGT gas series, older LTE-series 'Thin Twin'). Series names only.
A one-piece unit with a top-load agitator washer at the bottom and a small dryer on top, sharing one cabinet frame. The washer uses a 120 V supply; the electric dryer needs 240 V / 30 A. Older units use a direct-drive washer with a motor coupling, so coupling and agitator dog failures are common, and dryer parts sit high in the cabinet.
Safety first
- Unplug both sections; dryer is 240 V.
- Gas models: refer gas work to a licensed gas technician.
How it works
Washer: a top-load agitator washer. On older direct-drive models the motor couples to the transmission through a plastic and rubber coupling; a worn coupling stops agitation or spin. Agitator dogs in the upper agitator wear out and cause weak agitation.
Dryer: a compact electric or gas dryer with a belt-driven drum, a thermal fuse, thermostats and an AutoDry moisture system. Access usually starts by lifting the top and removing the front panel; the control panel and a plate between the washer and dryer may need to come off first.
Codes (on models with a display): Whirlpool's help pages list washer codes EL (lid lock) and E4 (lid opened during spin); other codes such as E5, EA, EC and EP are listed as needing service. Many laundry centers have knob controls and no codes at all.
The model number label is behind the dryer door or behind the washer door on stacked units.
