LG WashTower (single-unit washer/dryer with Center Control): field service manual
Covers: LG WashTower one-piece stacked units sold in the US: electric (WKEX-series), gas (WKGX-series) and heat-pump ventless (WKHC-series), roughly 2020 onward. Series names only; confirm the exact model on the rating label.
The WashTower is not a washer with a stacking kit: it is one factory-built cabinet with a 27-inch front-load washer at the bottom, a dryer on top and a single touch control panel at mid-height. Both sections still behave like LG's standalone direct-drive washer and LG dryer, so most diagnosis follows those platforms. The main differences for the tech are the shared control panel, two separate power supplies, and dryer components that sit high in the cabinet.
Safety first
- Unplug both sections before service; the electric dryer side is 240 V.
- The unit is tall and top-heavy: never pull it forward alone.
- Gas models: if you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside. Gas connections and the gas valve go to a licensed gas technician.
- Heat-pump dryer: the refrigerant circuit is sealed. Diagnosis only; repairs need an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Power: the washer and dryer sections are fed separately. On electric models the washer runs on a 120 V outlet while the dryer needs its own 240 V / 30 A circuit with a 3- or 4-wire cord that the installer supplies; the dryer terminal block sits near the top of the unit, so a longer cord than usual may be needed. Gas models run both sections from 120 V. The heat-pump version is ventless but its dryer side is still a 240 V appliance.
Washer section: a standard LG inverter direct-drive front-loader. The door locks, water enters through the inlet valve and dispenser, an electronic pressure (level) sensor reads the tub level, and the rotor/stator motor tumbles and spins the drum. The drain pump and its filter are behind the lower front access cover, together with a small residual-water hose for draining the tub by hand.
Dryer section: vented electric or gas models use an element or burner with thermistors and a moisture sensor, and report exhaust restriction through LG's d-series codes. The heat-pump model circulates air in a closed loop through a refrigerant heat pump and an air-circulation fan, collects condensate and pumps it out through a drain hose at the rear of the upper unit. Its lint filter has two parts and a magnet so the control can sense that it is installed.
Controls: the Center Control panel serves both sections and shows codes for either the washer or the dryer. LG does not publish how the two sections' boards talk to each other, so treat any communication fault as a board-level issue and follow the model's service documentation. Note which section was running when a code appeared, because several codes (OE, tE, LE) exist on both sides with different meanings.
