Whirlpool / Maytag / Amana bottom-freezer (single fresh-food door) refrigerator: field service manual
Covers: Whirlpool-built bottom-mount refrigerators with one fresh-food door and a freezer drawer (WRB series and sister badges). Electronic controls with a motorized air damper on most current models.
Same single-evaporator idea as the top-freezer, upside down. The coil is in the freezer at the bottom and cold air has to be driven up into the fresh food through a damper. When that path ices up, or the damper or fan stops, the fresh-food section warms while the freezer stays cold. That is the classic call on this platform.
Safety first
- Unplug the unit before service.
- Live checks at the board are caution work.
- Sealed-system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
The evaporator and fan are behind the freezer rear wall. The fan pushes air into the freezer and up a duct to the fresh-food section. An air damper in that path controls how much air the fresh food gets, and on electronic models a fresh-food thermistor drives the damper.
The compressor, condenser and condenser fan are in the machine compartment. The defrost heater and a bimetal sit on the evaporator. Defrost is started by the control and ends when the bimetal opens or the board's maximum heater time runs out.
Whirlpool's operating rules for its full-size refrigerators apply: indoor use between 55°F and 110°F (13-43°C), about 24 hours to reach temperature after install, wait 24 hours between control changes, and a showroom/demo mode that runs the lights but not the cooling.
