Frigidaire top-freezer refrigerator (FFTR, FFHT, LFTR series): field service manual
Covers: Frigidaire-built top-mount refrigerators in the FFTR, FFHT and similar series, with a mechanical cold control and air-damper control, or slider/electronic controls on some models. Single evaporator in the freezer. Mechanical timer on older units; adaptive defrost control on many later ones.
Frigidaire's top-mount is a high-volume builder and rental unit. It uses the same single-coil layout as other brands: frost-free freezer, cold air ducted into the fresh food. Defrost failures (heater, bimetal, timer/board) and evaporator fan problems make up most of the service calls. The sealed system is rarely at fault and is blocked work anyway.
Safety first
- Unplug the unit before service.
- Jumping test terminals or doing live checks on a defrost board is caution work.
- Sealed-system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
The evaporator and fan are behind the freezer rear panel. The fan pushes air into the freezer and through a passage into the fresh-food section. The compressor, condenser fan and drain pan are in the machine compartment at the bottom rear.
Frigidaire's guidance: the refrigerator control changes the temperature of both compartments, because it controls the compressor. The freezer control mainly affects the freezer by changing the air split. Adjust the freezer control when only the freezer is off, the refrigerator control when only the fresh food is off, and wait 24 hours after a change.
Defrost: the evaporator gets a timed or adaptive defrost. A bimetal defrost thermostat on the coil passes heater power only when cold and opens just above freezing. Adaptive boards count run time and adjust the interval rather than using a fixed cam.
Ice maker (optional kit on many models): mounted in the freezer, fed by a water valve at the back of the cabinet. See the ice maker manuals for test methods.
